BIO
Suzanne began performing her compositions in recitals at age 8 and her gift for hearing and interpreting music for people awakened when she was 30.
From the first time she played the music she heard for someone, the music revealed itself as a dynamic tool for self enquiry and personal development, for fostering dynamic increase in subtle awareness, spontanteous insights and life-changing, transformative experiences.
Grosvenor has been actively exploring and refining the interactive process utilizing music as a tool for assisting in self development and healing since that time.
AWAKENINGS
As a young adult in college, Suzanne underwent a profound and transcendent experience lasting several months which altered her understanding and the course of her life. Her life transformed again at 30 when she began realizing her propensity for hearing music in association with people and situations. (Often referred to as "synesthesia," see MIT Press for info.)
INNOVATIONS IN MUSIC as a Tool for Personal Growth
Suzanne's relationship with music was utterly transformed as she came to know music as a language for communicating the moment, conveying meaning, story and deep subtleties in awareness.
The Shifts in her perspective on life and the world became inspirations which, coupled with her lifelong training in music, constitute the foundation for her Therapeutic Music work for igniting higher potential.
She developed a method she now shares in workshops for cultivating a more happy, whole and authentic life.
Her Music Gatherings bring people together to enjoy spontaneous piano interpretations in a group process that supports participants to get more deeply in touch with their inner truths and innate potentials.
Music becomes a dynamic tool for transformation,
for awakening subtle awareness,
learning to relate from the heart,
tapping intuitive understanding,
and restoring greater harmony and
connection with the natural rhythms of life.
MUSIC BACKGROUND
At the age of ten, Suzanne was a guest soloist in a performance of Mozart with a youth orchestra and at seventeen was a winner in a Young Musicians Concerto Competition. She was awarded scholarships to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Arizona State University where she majored in music with the emphasis on composition, theory and piano performance.
After college, Grosvenor was enthralled with improvisation music and worked as a piano sideman in blues bands, jazz fusion, jazz, rock, pop, bluegrass, and other improvisational music groups. Her group was signed to a small record label. Suzanne wrote and recorded a song that became a regional top 40 radio hit in the southwest USA. Her band played concert venues, doing warm-up for acts like the Talking Heads and David Byrne.
In her youth Suzanne played cello, violin, clarinet and percussion with orchestras and later studied the saxophone, electronic instruments and synthesizers, acquiring her first Mini-Moog synth in 1973.
In the 1980's she fronted an experimental fusion band incorporating jazz fusion with rock, pop, cinematic original composition, minimalism and harmonic dissonance. She did studio session work on the side, playing on albums and projects of other musicians and was hired to compose soundtracks for short films and documentaries. Her soundtracks have aired on PBS television, NPR radio, the Disney Channel and in film festivals around the world.
When Suzanne released her first solo album in 1984 it became a regional radio hit on alternative and college radio stations.
TEACHING MUSIC
Suzanne teaches piano and coaches other instrumentalists, specializing in Hearing Your Own Music and skills for improvisation, composition, arranging and theory in a range of music genres and styles.
She coaches musicians in developing skills for well-rounded musicianship and being authentic in your music to realize your greatest joy of musical expression.
She believes that music students possess an internal, innate connection with music and the job as a teacher/coach is to bring out a student's talent and foster growth by providing access to the skills that allow for full development, enabling a musician to express themselves freely. It constitutes a fine balance for following a student's innate, inner direction while stimulating them with constant, new input and fostering techniques for a dedicated focus.
COMPOSITION
Suzanne first performed her compositions in concert at age eight. She has composed numerous pieces for piano, some for chamber orchestra, choir and multi-instrumental soundtracks for short films and radio drama.
When Suzanne first began hearing music in association with people and situations, she notated the music note for note onto paper each morning and evening. She published her first collection of piano compositions on the vinyl album Lantern in the Window, released 1984. Lantern became a favorite on college and eclectic music radio and received airplay on classical radio.
Suzanne was featured on the CD, Lights Out II of Various Artists along with music by William Ackerman, David Lanz, George Winston and other artists. Her soundtracks have aired on NPR Radio, PBS Television, the Disney Channel and have been featured in film festivals around the world.
THERAPEUTIC PERSONAL MUSIC
Therapeutic Personal Music is Suzanne's primary focus since the 1990s. She released a series of "music as medicine" spontaneous improvisation CDs and in 2012 released the CD Light Shining Through, now on Pandora Radio, Amazon and iTunes/ Apple Music as well as YouTube and this website. Light Shining Through has received enthusiastic reviews and testimonials as a collection of stimulating music for accelerating the listener's healing process.
In the 1990's Suzanne worked with special, altered tunings and micro-tunings in her Therapeutic Music work, as well as layering of synthesized and sampled sounds along with piano. After years of experimentation and testing, she now prefers working primarily with the tempered scale of the grand piano.
Suzanne is currently recording a new set of CDs to be released in 2019.
